At Levine Eye Center, we strive to provide comprehensive, primary eye care for the whole family. Preventative and routine eye exams are important to maintaining good eye health. Often, eye and vision problems do not have obvious symptoms or signs, but are easily diagnosed by a licensed optometrist. By diagnosing eye and vision conditions early on, our optometrist is able to provide treatment options and, in many cases, restore vision or prevent vision loss. The American Optometric Association recommends yearly or bi-yearly eye and vision exams, depending on whether you are at-risk or not.

Ocular and Medical History

During an eye exam, the doctor and staff will ask you questions about any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, medications your are currently taking, any blurry vision, your work environment, and your overall health. Family history and previous eye or vision conditions will also be discussed during this part of the examination. The doctor will consider this information when determining any treatments or recommendations.

Eye Function Testing

In addition to vision testing, an eye exam in our office includes testing eye functionality. Our staff and optometrists perform several tests to evaluate depth perception, color vision, eye muscle capabilities, peripheral vision, and responsiveness to light. Several other simple tests are completed to determine whether the eyes are focusing, moving, and working together properly. The test results enable the doctors to diagnose any underlying conditions that may be impairing the eyes ability to focus or work together.

Vision Testing

Regular vision testing and evaluations ensure that you always have the clearest vision possible. Our optometrists use visual acuity tests as part of a comprehensive eye exam to measure how each eye is seeing. The results of these tests are portrayed as a fraction, with 20/20 being the standard for normal distance and reading vision. Depending on the results of your vision test, Dr. Levine may prescribe corrective glasses, contacts, or eye exercises.

Eye Health

As part of a comprehensive eye exam, the doctors will examine the overall health of your eye through a slit lamp microscope using magnification and a bright light. To examine the internal structures of the eye, we may dilate the pupils. Increased eye pressure may be an indicator of glaucoma, so we utilize tonometry to measure eye pressure. After completing these short tests, Dr. Levine reviews the results and discusses any necessary treatment options with you.

In order to get a better view of the structures in the back of your eye, dilating drops are instilled in order to enlarge your pupils. These drops take about 20-30 minutes to work and allow the Doctor to get the best possible view of the back of your eye.

When your pupils are dilated you will be sensitive to lights and will have difficulty focusing on objects up close (for example, reading a book). Depending on the strength of the drops used, the dilation can last a few hours. To maximize comfort after the dilation, it is suggested that you bring sunglasses to your appointment. If you do not have sunglasses, or if you forget to bring them, our office can provide you with disposable sunglasses to wear home.

A thorough comprehensive eye exam can take an hour or more, depending on the patients conditions and the complexity of tests required to fully evaluate the vision and the health of your eyes.

About Contact Lens Fittings

Since not all patients wear contact lenses, there are additional fees for contact lens services. Contact lens fittings are not done without an up to date comprehensive exam because parameters required for the selection of an appropriate lens (ie: power and size) are measured at that time
